Why am I passionate about this?

Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated with people’s stories. I think this came from my grandfather, who, whether we liked it or not, would gather his grandkids in his study and wax poetically about his life. He was a writer and a teacher, so he knew how to spin a tale and keep even the most inattentive grandchildren captivated. I have for many years referred to myself as a “memoir junkie,” consuming life after life like a starving drifter. Memoirs are a great way to continue to remind ourselves that life is guaranteed to provide us with struggle, but we are equipped to overcome it. We must endure, explore, and prevail.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

Stephanie Lincoln Why did I love this book?

This book changed my life. The quiet way it examines the true, raw nature of trauma and healing helped show me that I needed to take my own journey of healing.

Cheryl’s brutal honesty about her struggles with her mother’s death and deep insecurities are something we can all relate to. At a writing workshop with Cheryl, she joked, “I thought I was writing a book about a hike, but it turned out to be a book about my mother.” The way Cheryl interweaves her memories along with her spectacular (and at times comical) hike along the PCT is genius. I fell in love with how devastatingly flawed and broken Cheryl is when she starts her hike, and I became invested in her healing journey along the way.

This book is a reminder that we all are on our own healing journey in some way, fantastically flawed and broken in our own ways. All we have to do is put one foot in front of the other and take that journey, and eventually, we will find our way.

What is this book about?

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe—and built her back up again.

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the…

Book cover of Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

Stephanie Lincoln Why did I love this book?

If you want a FIRE lit under your ass, read this book!

I love this book so much and have reread this one a couple of times because of the sheer injection of motivation I get straight into my veins when I read it. What I love about this first memoir from David is his brutal honesty about his childhood and his subsequent journey to become “the baddest motherfucker on the planet.”

This guy is the quintessential story of polishing a terd long enough, you will get a diamond. Whenever I am feeling sorry for myself, my mind goes back to this book. I think, “If David can do it, I can too. This is nothing compared to the odds he faced, and look at him now!”

Book cover of Leslie F*cking Jones

Stephanie Lincoln Why did I love this book?

I love this book because I can’t recall the last time I laughed so much while reading. As Leslie would say, “This b*tch is crazy!” Leslie’s wild stories about how she navigated her way into standup comedy made me throw my head back and howl with laughter.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed her narration style. She didn’t seem to be reading at all, rather than just following the general topics of the chapters. I don’t think that reading a paper book of Leslie’s story would have been as entertaining. Her magnetic personality shined, and I felt like I was just hanging out with her while she riffed about her life, telling hilarious story after story while I moved about my day.

Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you.

Book cover of All Secure: A Special Operations Soldier's Fight to Survive on the Battlefield and the Homefront

Stephanie Lincoln Why did I love this book?

This book “sat with me” heavily even when I wasn’t reading it. I love it when a book seems to haunt me, my thoughts turning back to some of the details of the last chapter or an errant thought going down the rabbit hole of a challenging topic related to the book. This was one of those books for me, and I cherish it.

I had the honor to interview Tom and his wife about the book, and their passion and dedication to helping heal our warfighters shines through in the book and in their lives. Being an Army Veteran and in the mental health field, the traumatic experiences Tom had and depicted in this book resonated deeply with me.

This memoir is a thoughtful reflection on the complications of war and the reverberations of trauma for those who make these sacrifices for our country.

Book cover of Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story

Stephanie Lincoln Why did I love this book?

“Wow” was the reaction in my mind more times than I can count as I was reading this book. I have always loved Jewel’s music and have seen her in concert a couple of times. When I saw she had a memoir on audiobook, I immediately started listening, and I am so glad I did. This book is a MUST LISTEN because she infuses her stories with live renditions of music she references in the chapters.

I received her story about her life the same way I received her music, brimming with raw emotion and spirit. Her life was so unique, growing up in backcountry Alaska, a third-generation product of pioneering grandparents who settled the wild frontier. There is never a dull moment in Jewel’s story, her life seemed to almost magically flow from one extreme to the next. Hearing the stories behind her songs made me connect with them so much deeper.

I treasure this book and it touched me in a way that makes this book truly special.
